Renewable Energy Certificates – How Do They Support Growth in Renewables

26 October 2022, 14:00-15:30 Central European Summer time

Recording of the webinar: https://youtu.be/AecyyP90tc8

Renewable energy certificates and credits are playing an increasingly important role in the renewable energy sector, also in combination with emission allowances. The basic idea is that such certificates can contribute in the allocation of resources for investment in renewable energies. Certificate schemes are intended to mobile financial resources, in particular for developing countries.  However, it has been questioned whether such certificate schemes actually contribute to the expansion of renewable energy capacities. Moreover, there is also a potential of fraud, due to the double use of such certificates.

Participants will present the status quo of the renewable energy markets across the globe and will also discuss alternative options such as location based renewable energy markets.

Speakers:

Welcome and Introduction: Stefan Gsänger, WWEA

Dörte Fouquet, EREF: RECs trade in the European Union

Eva Rausch, Grüner Strom Label: Labelling green energy in Germany

Steven Vanholme, EKOenergy: 5 dimensions of additionality and leadership – The role of the EKOenergy ecolabel

Matthew Brander, University of Edinburgh: Renewable energy certificates – how do they work and what are they good for

Anne Fernqvist, UNDP – Renewable energy certificates for corporate climate targets – user perspective on opportunities and challenges

Steffen Lackmann, Westfalenwind: Locally sourced, locally consumed renewable power – A successful business model

Discussion: How can location based renewable energy markets support the takeoff of renewables
